We can't express enough what a joy it is to work with survivors and how much we want to celebrate them. For this reason, along with many questions we get about the portrait development, we will feature one and share some background information with you.
Joyce White is a special person who not only used our portrait process to break open her story publically, but the experience inspired her to go further and start her own nonprofit, Hope for Women Arts. As an artist, she has used her creative talents for healing from her past and also to teach other women in shelters to do the same by offering free art classes taught by volunteer art instructors.
When we began working on her project, she knew just what she wanted to wear for her sitting. She wore georgious African clothing, headress, and a special piece of jewelry titled, Hole in My Heart. It represents the first wearable glass art that she ever made on her journey to freedom.
Since the creation, requests to purchase her portrait have been made on more than one occassion. Joyce's story has inspired many women, including us. Her story is called A New Perspective because she learned after many years that she had to change her outlook on life, including the people she was around, the environment she chose to live in, and her attitude toward herself. But she didn't do it alone. She is living proof that as a community, we can create a healthy, loving, and proactive environment for victims to change. It's never too late.
