There is NO SHAME in being a survivor of domestic abuse. Everyone has been a victim of something in their lives at one time or another. The social stigma of "it only happens to those people" is completely false. At Bravery Project, we aim to empower you as a survivor by showing the public that you are no longer a victim.
If you believe that people look down and judge you for the experiences you have overcome, the portrait program is a way to educate and help them understand the complexities surrounding domestic abuse. Each story is different from the other, and people will not begin to change their beliefs until those who have been there speak out. Furthermore, someone who is still in that dark place, may see your portrait, read you story, and see that he or she can become like you: A beautiful and strong person who has overcome a tremendous hardship.
As a participant, you are giving something back to the organizations that have helped you get back on your feet. Bravery Project is a way to help them raise money through the art shows. It's a meaningful and beautiful way of saying thank you.
